In Windows 95, the Programs menu would expand to multiple columns if necessary, but this was changed to scrolling menus in Windows 98. Here is how you can re-enable the multi-column feature:

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe. (Microsoft Registry Warning)

1. Start Regedit and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\MICROSOFT\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced
2. From the Edit menu, choose New, then String Value.
3. Type in StartMenuScrollPrograms
4. Double-click the new value and type FALSE as the data.
This tip requires Internet Explorer 5 installed on your computer.

Now, the 3 programs that were out of viewing range can be seen on the right side, MSN, Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player.

Now, you can see all the program options because the menu expands as necessary horizontally.
